In this article, I stray away from real estate for a little bit of fresh air and touch on a topic that we all love as Australians. As my colleagues know very much by now I am an avid lover of barbecues and I can not stop talking about my most recent purchases. Gas, Charcoal & Electric I have them all and my newfound love for smoking meats has taken me to a whole new level of barbecue that is giving me such enjoyment and is also teaching me new ways of cooking that I have not tried before. There are so many different types of barbecues that come to mind and even the most vast variations of different cultures. Our neighbours in New Zealand use the method of Hangi which is a method of steaming large amounts of food underground. The Hawaiians also use a similar method of cooking called the Kalua or an imu. Whatever your choice of barbecue cooking style we can all agree as a collective that barbecues are the best type of cooking and bring us all together as friends, family and we always have the most fun doing them. The origins of barbeques date back to the early 1400s after the Spaniards & Colombus landed in the Americas. They had found the Taino people roasting meat using a handmade wooden frame resting sticks above the fire. They then embraced this style of cooking and spread it to more areas of America and beyond. In Australia, the barbecue dates back 40,000 years ago and the mainstream backyard barbecue became popular in the 1960s with the introduction of the gas barbeque. Ever since then Australians have made barbequing a part of our lifestyle and our beloved Bunnings took the cult culture to a new level with its weekly sausage sizzle. We all know the importance as an Australian of the almighty Bunnings snag! Barbequing is much more than just meat through it is a great way to connect and bringing us together, have a few drinks and maybe spark up some competition with a bit of backyard cricket or a swim in the pool. Barbequing is a lifestyle and I think that is why most Australians love it so much. So if you're wondering what to do this weekend... How about a BBQ? Written By Shelby Harris |
